Kelli Renfrow: Rough-cuts

Author Anne Lamott wrote a book called Bird by Bird, intended as a guide for writers. The anecdote that gives way to the title essentially suggests that you have to start somewhere and tackle one element of your written piece at a time until it's finished. I'm attempting to take the same approach with my writing career in general ... blog by blog perhaps? We'll see how it goes. Thanks for reading.

Who am I?

I am the person who always made sensible career choices until I realized I'd like to be a writer. First, I earned a business degree from Texas A&M, because it seemed like a practical thing to do. My major? Marketing. Not a bad gig by any stretch of the imagination. It just doesn't work as an end goal for me.

After a false start, my career began at an ad agency, where I discovered that copywriting might just be the ticket. I had more than one great mentor, while attending classes to build a writing portfolio.

That portfolio helped me to land a job in the marketing department of The Dallas Morning News about three years ago. My duties put me in close proximity to all kinds of editors and writers on the editorial side of the street. I was hooked.

Of course, boldly and blindly approaching an editor and announcing my intent to write wasn't an easy sell. He was quite honest in telling me it was a long shot — at best. I certainly had nothing to lose, and everything to gain, so I went for it. Back to school for me. Journalism this time. Picked up a class on the basics.

After that, it took a while to get the green light on an idea, but it finally happened. I didn't really know what kind of writer I was trying to be, but the words kept pouring out in the form of personal essays. I've had a handful published in 2006.

Bottom line, I need to explore more than one outlet, and thus this blog was born. I'm still officially in marketing with The News, but here's to looking ahead.
